The Spoken Word

Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.

  1. 1839·Joseph Smith·Prophet
hand we must not delay, but are not required to sacrifice. We ought to have the building up of as our greatest object.— when wars come we shall have to flee to Zion. The cry is to make haste. The last revelation says ye shall not have time to have gone over the Earth until these things come. It will come as did the Cholera. war. & fires burning Earthquake one pestilence after another &c until the Ancient of Days come then judgment will be given to the Saints.

But as time went on, some of the ancient heresies reappeared, and this reappearance has been increasing in volume. The heresies began to question whether Jesus was the Christ, and that question, of course, really questions the Messiahship. Today one great body of the Christian world has abandoned Christ as the Messiah, the Atoning Sacrifice, the Redeemer of the world; they regard him now only as a great teacher and philosopher.
  4. 1965·Thomas S. Monson·Apostle
of Jesus. There was no ram in the thicket to be offered as a substitute sacrifice. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16.)
  5. 1975·Bruce R. McConkie·Apostle
Joseph Smith said, “A religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary [to lead] unto life and salvation.” ( Lectures on Faith, p. 58.)
  6. 1985·Howard W. Hunter·Apostle
In this simple but impressive manner the Savior instituted the ordinance now known as the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. With the suffering of Gethsemane, the sacrifice of Calvary, and the resurrection from a garden tomb, Jesus fulfilled the ancient law and ushered in a new dispensation based on a higher, holier understanding of the law of sacrifice. No more would men be required to offer the firstborn lamb from their flock, because the Firstborn of God had come to offer himself as an “infinite and eternal sacrifice.”
