The Spoken Word
Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.
1867·Joseph F. Smith·Apostle
I feel well and thankful to have the privilege of being a Saint; and I hope, brethren and sisters, that anything good that is said to us we will feel like carrying out in our lives. It is our duty, and we should never fail to do so.
Embarrassments in Arising to Speak—The Different Religions—None Perfect Except Revealed from God — jod
1971·Bruce R. McConkie·Apostle
True religion deals with spiritual things. We do not come to a knowledge of God and his laws through intellectuality, or by research, or by reason. I have an average mind—one that is neither better nor worse than the general run of mankind. In the realm of intellectual attainment I have a doctor’s degree, and I hope my sons after me will reach a similar goal. In their sphere, education and intellectuality are devoutly to be desired.
The Lord’s People Receive Revelation — cojc
1979·N. Eldon Tanner·Apostle
I hope that each of us may benefit from their application. I bear my witness that they are true and that this Church and the work we are engaged in are true. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Constancy amid Change — cojc
1992·M. Russell Ballard·Apostle
Hope is a precious principle by which to live. However, some among us may have lost all hope because of sin and transgression. A person can become so deeply immersed in the ways of the world that he sees no way out and loses all hope. My plea to all who have fallen into this trap of the adversary is to never give up! Regardless of how desperate things may seem or how desperate they may yet become, please believe me, you can always have hope. Always.
The Joy of Hope Fulfilled — cojc
1998·Gordon B. Hinckley·Prophet
Permit me to read to you parts of a letter from a young man now serving a mission. It is written to his family, and I hope I do not violate propriety in reading it to this great gathering. I will not disclose the name of the writer or the mission in which he serves.
To the Boys and to the Men — cojc
2001·Thomas S. Monson·Apostle
Once I heard from a newly ordained deacon soon after he had received the Aaronic Priesthood. He said, “Today is my first day to pass the sacrament. I can’t wait. I know it is a very holy ordinance, so I’ll treat it with care. I have a true testimony of the Church, and I hope to go on a mission soon.”
